Multicultural Children's Book Day 2020

Image result for the story i'll tell

The book I was gifted to review for the event was "The Story I'll Tell" by  Nancy Tupper Ling Illustrated by Jessica Lanan published by Lee and Low Books. This story is about a little Asian boy who was adopted. Although it doesn't specifically come out and state that this boy is adopted in the story. The story is about all of the different ways the mother is explaining to her son where he came from. She tells him all different tales such as a hot air balloon dropped him off in their yard, a dragon queen who tried to raise him as her own. Each story has some truth to where the boy came from. There are little hints of the boys Asian culture throughout the book, being wrapped in a red blanket, a trail of beautiful lanterns, a reference to Yunnan which is in southwestern China, and a beautiful illustration of Lion dancers at the August moon festival. I really loved this story and the creative ways the mother told her son where he came from. It is a perfect story to read to a little one who may be asking where they came from.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7 th year! This non-profit children’s
literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving
moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the
market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’
books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.
