Multicultural Children's Book Day 2020

Image result for the story i'll tell

The book I was gifted to review for the event was "The Story I'll Tell" by  Nancy Tupper Ling Illustrated by Jessica Lanan published by Lee and Low Books. This story is about a little Asian boy who was adopted. Although it doesn't specifically come out and state that this boy is adopted in the story. The story is about all of the different ways the mother is explaining to her son where he came from. She tells him all different tales such as a hot air balloon dropped him off in their yard, a dragon queen who tried to raise him as her own. Each story has some truth to where the boy came from. There are little hints of the boys Asian culture throughout the book, being wrapped in a red blanket, a trail of beautiful lanterns, a reference to Yunnan which is in southwestern China, and a beautiful illustration of Lion dancers at the August moon festival. I really loved this story and the creative ways the mother told her son where he came from. It is a perfect story to read to a little one who may be asking where they came from.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7 th year! This non-profit children’s
literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving
moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the
market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’
books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.

Multicultural Children's Book Day Book Review of "We Are Grateful"

I had the honor of reviewing the book "We Are Grateful" by Traci Sorell illustrated by Frane Lessac and published by Charlesbridge . This is a gorgeous, colorful picture book all about what to be thankful for in each season. I like how it mentions things that you might not typically think of as being "thankful for" such as hardships, losing a loved one and struggles ancestors had to go through. My favorite part(s) were when it would teach you the word in Cherokee and also have the pronunciation key and definition for the reader so you can read the word correctly. I love learning new languages and this was one of my students favorite parts as well! The illustrations in this book are truly beautiful.

Head over to author Traci Sorell's website for some great coloring pages your students will love completing after reading the story! There is also a classroom & activity guide which contains crossword puzzles, seasons of gratitude project and vocabulary booklet! All linked to the Common Core State Standards (click on "books" at the top select "We Are Grateful" then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and you can find the links to the activity guide and coloring pages)

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.

March Currently

I’m linking up with Oh boy! Fourth Grade for the March Currently!

  • I am LOVING the new Kelly Clarkson song “Heartbeat Song” it really gets me going at the gym!!
  • What can I say? I love my husband! He had dinner ready and waiting for me tonight when I got home from the gym!
  • I really really NEED spring to get here NOW! I am so sick of all of this snow! I am still set on wearing my flip-flops starting on the first day of spring, like I always do! I don’t care how cold it is or how much snow is still on the ground. I hate regular shoes, I was meant to wear flip-flops at all times.
  • I am trying to be better and better about going to the gym and getting more muscle! It’s hard when it’s a 25 minute drive from work! :/ I think next year I will be signing up at the gym that is down the street even though it is more expensive!
  • Oh yes I am in NEED of a vacation…to a tropical place. I am dying to be on the beach and have some warmer weather!
  • Hubby is seriously going to lose it if my spray painting fiasco isn’t done my April vacation! I started this jigundo spray painting revamp of all the bins in my classroom so that they are all part of my purple and green theme.

Egg Experiment

We did a science experiment today with one brown egg and one white egg. The class had to make a prediction at what they think it will look like on the inside once I crack it open. Will the brown and white egg look the same or different on the inside? Our class was divided about half thought they'd look the same and half thought they'd look different. Some children said that the brown egg would be brown on the inside and the white egg would be white on the side, others thought one would have more yellow than the other.

We then made connections to some stories we read last week about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he stood up for black people and wanted them to be treated equal to white people. Even though some people may look different on the outside, we all have the same feelings on the inside. If someone does something mean to us we all feel bad on the inside. If someone makes fun of us we all feel sad on the inside...it doesn't matter what color skin we have.

Stackers

We started a new math game today called "stackers". One partner was the "architect" and the other partner was the "builder". The architect had to look at the picture card and give directions to the builder on how to stack the cubes to make the structure on the picture card. (The builder can not see the picture card, only the architect can) we were focusing on using positional vocabulary like next to, on top of, to the right, to the left, beside, behind, etc.

Here is the architects view...

Here you can see the board that the builder has to stack the cubes on...

#noworksheetwednesday

I'm sure you've all heard of "No Worksheet Wednesday". A lot of teachers are trying not to use any worksheets one day a week. I think that's a great thing and that more teachers should try it out and try to do more than just one day a week!! In years past, I used to go through sooo much paper, photocopying endless amounts of worksheets and packets and whatnot. I'm sure we've all been there. Ever since my district adopted a new kindergarten curriculum, Tools of the Mind, that was the end of that! NOT ONE WORKSHEET PEOPLE!! It was scary! How will the kids learn?! Won't the parents be wondering what we do all day?! I have to admit I do miss some of the cutesy worksheets but boy do I NOT miss the never ending piles and piles of paper in folders in the "all done box". It's a great feeling I have to admit! The whole curriculum is based on the Vygotskian approach and learning through games with partners. You learn better through others. Everything is with partners! We do lots of "I Have, Who Has?" games, dramatizing The Magic Tree House stories, *a lot* of work on self-regulation. The second half of the year we introduce "learning records" which are very simple papers that each child completes after each game/center. Not really a worksheet, they never fill anything in they just record their learning. For example, say one center was "I Have, Who Has?" letters, they would play the game with their group and when they're done they write down four letters that they had in the game and draw a picture of something that begins with that letter. Real simple, super quick. They finish that and point and read it to their "study buddy" (partner) and move on to their second center. This is my second year implementing this curriculum and I have to admit at first I was super hesitant but it really is amazing. Last year was the first year I had ALL of my students at or above (way above) benchmark! That's with ELL students who knew minimal English in September, they were reading ON GRADE LEVEL at the end of the year!

MOvember!!

As some of you may know two and a half years ago right around the time of our first dating anniversary my boyfriend at the time was diagnosed with testicular Cancer. He lived in NJ and I live in Boston so I immediately left school and drove down to be with him. I don't even remember the drive down it all seem like a blur. He had surgery and was fine and soon moved up to Boston with me and had to go back to Dana Farber every couple of months for tests and scans to make sure that it didn't come back. 14 months after his first diagnosis and just a couple weeks after we got engaged we found out that it had come back and spread to his lymph nodes in his abdomen. He would have to start 9 weeks of chemotherapy the following week. Not exactly how you imagine starting off planning your wedding! I tried not to think about what we were going through and just take it day-by-day and put a happy face on and we got through it just like we did the first time. As of September 24th he has been cancer free! We continue to go back to Dana Farber every 3 months to keep an eye on it, and the week of the appointment I can't help but think what if it comes back, it's a terrible feeling to always be thinking that "what if". I can't imagine how he must feel. We've got one year cancer free done and we have four more to go and I hope we never have to deal with this crap again because it's the scariest thing ever.

He had to get his lungs tested because one of the three chemo drugs he had to get affects your lungs. The technician was in awe at his lung capacity she said it was "super human". Which of course he still reminds me of! He credits it to years of swimming!

He loves when I make play dough for my class. He has to test it out before I bring it in!

Last day of chemo!

One of our engagement photos that I just absolutely love...

Some pictures of our wedding this past July!

So needless to say we are huge supporters of #MOvember and raising awareness for men's cancer. I became a #MOsista and if you're feeling generous and would like to donate to my page to support #MOvember here is the link to my #MOsista page!

Thanks to Heather from Creative Teaching Press for all the mustache swag! The little mustache cut outs were perfect for our "Disguise a Turkey" project!

We even got photobooth props that my class absolutely LOVED they went crazy over this! They kept their mustaches on all day I was cracking up!

These mustache postcards are perfect for the great postcard exchange I'm joining where our class is sending one postcard to a different teacher/class in each state...

I love to pay it forward and didn't want to keep all of these goodies just for myself so I did a MOvember giveaway on my Instagram and @arlanzone won all of these goodies!

Tools of the Mind

This year our town adopted a new kindergarten curriculum, "Tools of the Mind." It pretty much revolves around teaching self-regulation to the children which will in turn make them better students and ready to learn. The first four weeks of school our theme is "fairy tales" we do a different fairy tale each week. On Monday, we make props for that fairy tale and Tuesday-Friday we dramatize the story. Each day one group goes to a different center and era to dramatize the story using different props. After we finish the fairy tales unit we move onto the "Magic Tree House" book series. We do books 1-12. Each book we take on the theme of its time and place for three weeks. The first week we build background knowledge about that time and place, reading non-fiction books to learn facts about that time and place and we make props each day to support the book. The second and third week we read one chapter a day of the Magic Tree House book and dramatize the story in our centers each day.

Here we are making or props for the second Magic Tree House book "Knight at Dawn."

The Numerals Game

We added new "Frankenstein" counters to our "Numerals Game" . One person, who has the hand mediator card picks a number and counts out that many counters, the person with the check mediator card takes the counters and checks them using the numerals board and puts one counter on each dot. Then they tell their partner if they counted the right amount of counters and we switch mediator cards!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day!!

Today the students walked into the class each holding their own flower to give to me. We put them all together in a beautiful bouquet after! It was so sweet and thoughtful! The parents also put together a really cute picture book from Shutterfly with all different pictures from throughout the year. It was by far the nicest teacher appreciation gift I have received! The PTO also put up quite the spread for lunch for all the teachers, it was delicious! They even volunteered their time to cover our class for an hour so we could sit down and enjoy our lunch without having to shove food into our mouths and go, like how lunchtime usually is. :o) It was a great day!!

Plant a Sight Word!

To go along with our "plants" unit, we were building word wall words with Lima beans that had letters written on them! First, we had to build the word then we had to write the letters in the seeds on the paper.
