I had the honor of reviewing the book "We Are Grateful" by Traci Sorell illustrated by Frane Lessac and published by Charlesbridge . This is a gorgeous, colorful picture book all about what to be thankful for in each season. I like how it mentions things that you might not typically think of as being "thankful for" such as hardships, losing a loved one and struggles ancestors had to go through. My favorite part(s) were when it would teach you the word in Cherokee and also have the pronunciation key and definition for the reader so you can read the word correctly. I love learning new languages and this was one of my students favorite parts as well! The illustrations in this book are truly beautiful.
Head over to author Traci Sorell's website for some great coloring pages your students will love completing after reading the story! There is also a classroom & activity guide which contains crossword puzzles, seasons of gratitude project and vocabulary booklet! All linked to the Common Core State Standards (click on "books" at the top select "We Are Grateful" then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and you can find the links to the activity guide and coloring pages)
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
